History

For over 150 years, the congregation of Wesleyanna has been offering up prayers to God along with hymns of praise and has heard sermons from God’s Holy Word proclaimed by dedicated ministers.

Wesleyanna Methodist Church had its beginning sometime after McMinn County was created in 1819 by the Tennessee legislature out of lands ceded to the federal government by the Cherokee Nation. One of the early settlements in McMinn County was the Wesleyanna Community. An early pioneer family that settled in the community was James Wright Long, his wife Nancy Reynolds and their two small children. It was in the Long’s family home where people from the Wesleyanna Community began to meet for Bible study and worship. This gathering soon outgrew the house and a pole building constructed with no roof became known as “Long’s Meeting House”.

Sometime between 1822 and 1825 “Long’s Meeting House” became Wesleyanna Methodist Church. On July 27, 1859 Wesleyanna Methodist Church, South purchased the parcel of land the current church building sits for the sum of $25. The school land next to the property was mentioned in this deed.
